MY EXPERIENCE AT HEARTS FOR HONDURAS SCHOOL IN A TIME OF PANDEMIC
This has been a year that will undoubtedly be remembered for generations. How many of us at the beginning of 2020 made a list of goals that we would fulfill but then realized God's plans for us were different? I am not the exception. I made detailed lesson plans for the students in my math classes, thinking of ideas and methods that I could use to improve my teaching. Personally, I like to innovate, but we were launched into virtual education without warning. We didn’t even have a chance to say a meaningful goodbye in our classrooms.
But without a doubt, as I have always known, we are a unique school, and we continue to be set apart in the midst of these unprecedented times. Although our students have very few resources, they have put a lot of effort into completing their homework, and their parents invest hours with their children until they finish. In my math classes, I tell my students how satisfied I am with their progress. I can see a little bit of myself reflected in each task; they use the same pencil colors that I use in each of my teaching videos. They do the same step by step process in each exercise and they always expand upon it. Every day they surprise me and demonstrate that they are learning. It troubles me when I hear people on the news complaining that students are not learning anything during this pandemic because our students are proving that to be untrue.
The children of Hearts for Honduras School have shown me that even in the midst of this situation they continue to advance through the screen of a cell phone. I am convinced that all of our supporters’ dedication is bearing fruit and producing more life-changing stories from the children. This not only bears fruit in the students but also in the teachers as the sponsors continue to trust in us. Although virtual education stresses me out and consumes more time, the admirable work submitted by my students makes me forget my fatigue and brings a smile to my face. I am reminded that we are doing this for the glory of God.
In one of the many homework reviews, one of my students told me “Teacher, I already know what degree I want to study. I want to be a teacher like you, I want to teach as you teach.”
It is these conversations that motivate me and reassure me that someday they will fulfill their dreams. I can only end by saying that I thank God for the opportunity to be a member of the Hearts for Honduras team. I am grateful that you, our supporters, believe in the dreams of these little giants. You are a blessing for the Hearts for Honduras School.

Este ha sido un año que sin duda será recordado por generaciones. Cuantos al inicio de este año llenamos nuestras libretas con metas y deseos que cumpliríamos en este 2020, y para nuestra sorpresa los planes de Dios para nosotros eran distintos. No soy la excepción creo que llene muchos planes para los estudiantes en la clase de matemáticas, pensando en ideas y métodos que podría usar para mejorar mi forma de enseñar, porque en lo personal me gusta innovar. Pero fuimos lanzados a la educación virtual sin previo aviso pensando que volveríamos, no nos dimos tal vez un abrazo tan fuerte que perdurará para todo este tiempo que hemos estado sin poder ver a nuestros estudiantes.
Pero sin duda alguna y como siempre lo he pensado somos una escuela diferente y en este tiempo lo seguimos siendo. A pesar de que nuestros estudiantes cuentan con muy pocos recursos han puesto mucho esmero en cumplir con sus tareas, los padres pasan horas sentados con sus hijos hasta que las ven terminadas.
En mi clase de matemáticas no saben cuanta satisfacción siento del progreso que están teniendo, puedo ver reflejado en cada tarea un poquito de mí, al ver que usan los mismo colores de lápices que uso en los videos que les comparto de cada tema, realizan el paso a paso que yo realizo en cada ejercicio y van siempre más allá, a diario me sorprenden y me demuestran que están aprendiendo. Realmente me molesta escuchar a gente en los noticieros decir que los estudiantes no están aprendiendo nada durante esta pandemia porque nuestros niños están mostrando todo lo contrario. Los niños de Corazones Para Honduras me han demostrado que aun en medio de esta situación está permitido soñar, que sus estudios continúan aun detrás de un celular. Estoy tan segura que todo el esmero que ustedes han dedicado a nuestra escuela está dando su fruto y que verán más historias de cambios de vida en estos niños, y saben que, no solo producen frutos en estos niños sino también en nosotros como maestros por confiar en lo que hacemos y créanme que aunque este tipo de educación virtual me estrese y ocupe un poco más de tiempo, al ver las excelentes tareas que envían nuestros estudiantes me hacen olvidar todo cansancio y solo puedo sonreír porque sé que estamos haciendo las cosas como para Dios.
En unas de las tantas revisiones de tareas que he tenido durante este tiempo una de mis estudiantes me dijo - profe ya sé qué carrera quiero estudiar, y yo pregunte- ¿cuál?, y ella respondió -quiero ser maestra como usted, yo quiero enseñar como usted enseña. Son esta clase de conversaciones las que me motivan y me hacen soñar junto con ellos de algún día no muy lejano cumplirán todos sus sueños.
Solo puedo terminar diciendo que agradezco a Dios por formar parte de este equipo y que agradezco tanto que crean en los sueños de estos pequeños gigantes. Ustedes son una bendición para la escuela Corazones para Honduras.
